Organic mountain coffee
from Colombia
When coffee is a catalyst for development
In the southern Andes, on steep and remote mountain slopes, organic coffee is grown by small family
farms. With deep respect for nature, the coffee is
cultivated among other crops, without synthetic
fertilisers or pesticides, and with shade trees, natural compost and biodiversity at the forefront. The
result is a clean, fresh cup with delicate fruit notes
– a coffee that benefits both the flavour and the
people who grow it.
Many of the coffee farmers in Tolima belong to
Indigenous communities, and their approach to
coffee cultivation is traditional, rooted in care for
the natural environment.
The hand-picked coffee is produced by four
farmer groups – Las Orquídeas, Bilbao, Gaitania
and Ataco – all certified organic.

This region of Colombia has, for many years, been
isolated due to the armed conflict between the
FARC movement and the Colombian government.
But since the 2016 peace agreement, coffee has become a social and economic catalyst for the local
population and for the development of the area.
Tolima coffee is a strong example of how Kontra
Coffee acts as a catalyst for social and economic
progress. Here, new paths for organic farming and
collaboration with smallholder farmers are tested
– inspiring and pushing the entire BKI Group in a
more responsible direction.
