Regenerative forest coffee
from Indonesia
Coffee that protects both the
rainforest and the orangutan
KONTRA Coffee’s Orang Utan coffee is grown
in the Southeast Asian rainforest of Sumatra.
Produced under eco-friendly conditions that
preserve the forest, it results in a truly unique
specialty coffee with a sweet, spicy flavour
profile. The coffee is grown without deforestation, and shade trees are planted to support
the natural environment and give the coffee
its characteristic depth and richness.
The long-term partnership behind the Orang
Utan Coffee project – where farmers receive
a quality premium – not only supports smallholder farmers in the area, but also helps
protect one of the world’s most important
biodiversity hotspots. Everything from rare
birds to insects plays a vital role in this ecosystem – and of course the orangutan, after
which the coffee is named.
Through this unique partnership with local
farmers, responsibly and carefully grown coffee is produced – providing economic stability for small communities while helping secure
the survival of the endangered orangutan.
The Orang Utan Coffee project shows how
coffee can become a key driver of nature
conservation – a strong example that sustainability is not only about climate, but also
about protecting the biodiversity that makes
both our coffee and our world richer.
At the same time, the project demonstrates
how KONTRA Coffee generates knowledge
and experience that can be shared across BKI.
The learnings from Sumatra have laid the
foundation for our focus on forest-grown
coffee – an area where respect for nature
and climate truly go hand in hand.
